Analysis of Education
Education: I have had the opportunity to review the education budget request from the School Superintendent. Like many departments, the School Department is facing a number of challenges maintaining services and retaining needed employees. However our current revenue picture cannot support the level of increase that the School Department has requested and according to the formula previous agreed upon, the School Department has been asked to balance their expenses for FY11 at $9,081,394.
Readers may recognize that this amount appears shy of what the Town would ordinarily support on Town Meeting floor. That would be correct. One interesting wrinkle is that the state is planning on sending local school districts direct grants to make up the difference in the state cut in Chapter 70 aid and -4% which was promised.
In addition, it should be noted that Town meeting moved an additional $20,000 from the Town’s trash budget making this appropriation $9,101,394. The net amount to go to education aid in this budget would be $9,155,966.
