Statement on Polling location at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in West Boylston
A story ran in the Worcester Telegram and Gazette on January 26th that the Town of West Boylston would be removing the religious icons and symbols from the public view during the voting on election day. The Town had agreed to do this because of erroneous information we received that this was a requirement of state law. The Town has since received clarification from the Secretary of State’s office that there is no such requirement of law and the Town will not cover or remove the religious symbols from the voting location at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church during voting on election day.

If any of the residents of the Town object to this polling location, they are advised to contact Kim Hopewell, Town Clerk and Chief Elections Officer for the Town, who will be happy to arrange for alternative voting opportunities for you, including the option of voting by absentee ballot.

The move to Our Lady of Good Counsel Church was made because of structural concerns about the Town’s previous voting location – the Helen Mixter Municipal Office Building on Prescott Street.  That building was evacuated earlier last week due to safety concerns.  The Church provided a safe and reasonable alternative to the voters of West Boylston and we thank them for stepping up and assisting the Town in our hour of need.

The Town apologizes to the church officials, both in West Boylston and outside of West Boylston, for the confusion.
