March 18, 2008: New Massachusetts Law to Protect Against Identity Theft

The issue of identity theft is one of the most concerning issues in our new technological age.  The media has focused on many stories about identity theft over the past few years.  To minimize the impact of identity theft, the state has recently passed an identity theft law which requires notice to Massachusetts residents in the event of a 'breach of security or an unauthorized acquisition or unauthorized use of personal information.

This new law requires that if an agency of the state, which includes the Town of West Boylston, knows that such a breach of security has occurred then notice must be given to the affected residents as well as various state officials.

You should know that the Town of West Boylston is committed to protecting our residents and their personal information.  According to the new law, personal information is defined as Social Security Numbers, Driver's License Numbers, financial account numbers, and/or credit or debit card information.  If the Town is made aware of any breach of security and there is any substantial risk to our residents, you should be aware that the Town will aggressively move to protect the residents of this Town and are prepared to do so.

Personal information deserves to be protected and the Town Government takes every precaution to do so.
