New Carbon Monoxide Detector Regulations From Building Inspector & Fire Chief

INSTALLATION OF CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS
Effective June 1, 2007

All carbon monoxide (CO) detection systems for 1 and 2 family homes shall be installed in accordance with State Building Code Section 5313.4, Plumbing/Gas Code Section 5.08, State Fire Prevention Code Section 31.00 and NFPA 720.

All required CO Detectors in new construction or substantially renovated existing construction (as determined by the Inspector of Buildings) shall be interconnected, hard wired and have battery backup.  Detectors must be located on each floor of all 1 and 2 family dwelling including basements.

A CO detector(s) required under the State Plumbing Code or other Codes shall be interconnected with all other CO detectors within the building when installed in new construction or substantially renovated existing construction.

All locations for CO, Smoke and Heat detection systems or devices in 1 and 2 family homes must be approved by the Inspector of Buildings prior to obtaining a permit for that system or device from the Fire Department.
